Een "crofter" is iemand die land pacht.
- De eerste bekende vermelding van een persoon met deze naam staat in de grafelijkheidsrekening van 1316: "Hughe van den Crofte" (Hughe uten Crofte) huurde land in het Haagambacht 'up den Vene' resp. 'up den Gheest'. Omdat dit in het duingebied bij's-Gravenhage is, mogen we aannemen dat de krocht waar Hughe zijn naam aan ontleende in deze omgeving gelegen was. In 1334 was deze Hughe overleden, het land 'up den Veen' werd toen verhuurd aan "Hughen wedewe van den Crofte, metten kinderen". Hoewel we weten dat Hughe nageslacht had is het niet mogelijk een stamreeks met hem aan te vangen.
- In de 16e eeuw woonde er in Naaldwijk en Monster een uitgebreide familie Vercroft, waarin de namen Jan en Dirck veelvuldig voorkwamen. Uit deze familie stammen alle naamdragers Van der Kroft en een deel van de naamdragers Van der Krogt.
- De overige Van der Krogt-en zijn nakomelingen van 'Joannes van der Krogt'. Een relatie tussen Jan Claesz Vercroft (II) en de Vercroft-en uit Naaldwijk is (nog) niet aangetoond.
- De stamreeks begint bij Jan Claesz Vercroft (van Crocht), vermeld als ambachtsbewaarder van de Dijkpolder onder Maeslandsluys 1541,
wonend in de Duifpolder in het ambacht Dorp aan de Gaag tegenover het Huis ten Dorp, waar hij in 1555 12 1/2 morgen land bezat.
