- Heer van Waterland. Hij schijnt tot de Raad van de graaf behoord te hebben. Hij komt het eerst voor op 24 juni 1204 als getuige bij het verdrag tussen Dirk, bisschop van Utrecht, en Lodewijk, graaf van Loon (met zijn broeder Arnold; Oorkondeboek I no 197).
Op 28 aug 1215 is hij in de Raadkamer van de graaf bij diens beslissing over het geschil tussen Lubbertus, abt van het klooster te Egmond, en Willem, zoon van Wouter van Egmond, over de rechten van de advocaat van de kerk aldaar (Oorkondeboek I no247). In juli 1220 was hij met tal van edelen van de graaf tegenwoordig te Aelbrechtsberg, toen graaf Willem I aan zijn 2e echtgenote Maria van Brabant als huwelijksgift de stad Dordrecht schonk met de tol, het ambacht van Dorflith en Manlande, deHof Falkenburgh en enige goederen in Zeeland (Oorkondeboek I no 270).
In okt 1222 is hij weer in de omgeving van graaf Floris V, toen deze aan Dirk van Wassenaar vergunde dat diens lenen zowel op de dochters als op de zonen zou mogen versterven (Oorkondeboek I no 277).
Van zijn ridderschap blijkt niets.
Volgens van Leeuwen overleed hij in 1226, maar volgens de Kroniek van Egmond, blz 274, op 20 sep 1224 ligt hij te Egmond begraven binnen 't Paradijs.
Hij schonk aan de abdij een rente van twee pond. Vermeld op 5-12-1216, noemt zich dan Jan Putthen, naar de heerlijkheid, waarvan hij namens zijn 2e vrouw NN van Voorne, heer is. Na haar dood is hij waarschijnlijk hertrouwd met Aleida van Altena, die op 4-7-1229 weduwe is.
Zijn zoon Nicolaas van Putten (1229-1247) noemt de heer van Voorne op 23-6-1235 zijn leenheer; deze oudste zoon (Nicolaas) draagt de naam Persijn, de jongste, Hugo, is kennelijk naar zijn moeders vader vernoemd.
- Jan Persijn, de beroemdste Persijn die in omstreeks 1224 Haarlem tegen de Kennemers beschermde, en die ter vergelding van deze dienst werd beleend met de Heerlijkheid (ambtsgebied) Amsterdam, met bewilliging van Floris de V. Jan Persijn is begraven in de abdij van Egmond "binnen het paradijs", en schonk aan dezelfde abdij 2 pond rente.

- Het bestuurlijke begin van Waterland is in nevelen gehuld. Wel is bekend dat de Waterlanders zich van meet af aan hebben gemanifesteerd als een strijdlustig volkje. In 1268 kwamen zij met de Kennemers in opstand tegen de heersende adel en verwoestten zij het kasteel van hun Heer Jan Persijn, waarna de strijdende partijen zich in 1273 na tussenkomst van Floris V met elkaar verzoenden. Persijn mocht zijn kasteel niet herbouwen, noch in steen noch in hout. Ook was hij gedwongen een deel van
zijn Heerlijke rechten af te staan, voortaan mocht het vonnis van de plaatselijke schepenen bijvoorbeeld nooit meer door de Persijnen herroepen worden. In 1282 verkochten zij hun Waterlandse rechten voor de helft aan Floris V, waarna de andere helft in 1409 volgde toen de laatste Persijn kinderloos stierf. Vanaf toen hoorde Waterland ?gewoon? bij het graafschap Holland. Maar veel bemoeienis hebben de graven niet gehad met dit gewest, de bepalingen van 1282 bleven van kracht.
