Zwanen speelden al vanaf de middeleeuwen een hoofdrol in de beeldvorming van Waterland. Er prijkte een zwaan op de wapens van 5 van de 6 Waterlandse hoofddorpen en de heren van Purmerend voerden een zwaan in hun familiewapen, net als de
Persijns. Dit oude geslacht van de heren van Waterland bewoonde een kasteeltje dat zij ooit De Swaensborch hadden gedoopt. Dat was allemaal niet voor niets, zwanen genoten namelijk in de middeleeuwen een beschermde status; alleen adellijke personenmochten zwanen houden en het doden van een zwaan werd streng gestraft.
